A WEEPING PROPHET

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Today's Reading: Lamentations 3:31-32; 40

3:31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever.
3:32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.
3:40 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.

Can you imagine the situation Jeremiah, the prophet, was going through? If you are the only one within your people, who believes and knows God. Only you and your only friend, Baruch, who helped you writing everything that you want him to write.

Jeremiah was like stranger within the Jews. People didn't like what he said. What he preached, was not popular, even more he had to be in jail for telling the truth. He was accused to put down the Israeli army's hearts when he said to the nation what God had told him, not to fight against the enemy because they are going to loose, died and suffered.

In contrast, Israel people listened to the fake prophets because of the words are nice to be listened. In result, the Israeli have to face the lost, slavery, starvation, and very deep suffering.

Jeremiah was the only one who knew the way out from the suffering of the Israeli at that time, but no one listened to him. Because that nation did not believe in God. They were not different with other nations whose bowed down to idols . They didn't know God. Ironically, there are another nations whose believed in God at that time. For example: Pharaoh Nekho from Egypt and Nebuchadnezzar from Babel (II Chronicles 35:20-22; II Chronicles 36:13; Jeremiah 39:11-12).

It's understandable why Jeremiah was so sad and weeping in whole his life. Some people even called him a weeping prophet. He wept when seeing Israeli was in slavery, starving, died, killed, and women were raped. Not only that, even women who before was very gentle ,cooked their babies because of hungriness. The aristocrats have becoming blacker then soot, thin of hungriness, skin stick to their bones (Lamentations 4:7-10)

What was the real solution for the Israeli of that particular time? There were times when Jeremiah reminded them of their real victories in Josiah time, not long ago. He was the only king who lived righteous in God's eyes at Jeremiah's time. But the four kings after that was evil. From there, we supposed to get the answer of the questions above that the only solution was to go back to God.

There was one hope in Jeremiah chapter 3 from all the book of Lamentations that Jeremiah have stated. Jeremiah said that God would not do that forever. Even though He gave suffering. He loved them according to His great love. He asked the nation to search and to check on their life and go back to God.

In another words, the solution of the all human problems is to go back to God. Because most of the time, the life problems appears as the cause or the false of their daily life. People whom don't know God supposed to seek Him with all heart, listen to His word, search Him, check on their life, believe, repent and go back to Him. Is it that simple? Yes. The rest, let God works and do His part.

Word of Prayer:
God thank you for the lesson this morning. Give your servant ability to keep listening to Your word, searching on the words, examining my life, and getting closer to you day by day. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
