THE TRUTH ABOUT LIFE & DEATH

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Today's Reading: Luke 9:57-60

9:57 As they were talking along the road, a man said to him,” I will follow you wherever you go.”
9:58 Jesus replied.” Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nets, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
9:59 He said to another man, “Follow me .” But the man replied. “ Lord first let me go and bury m father .”
9:60 Jesus said to him,” Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and poclaim the kingdom of God.”

The “Day by Day Bible” writer, DR William Barclay, said the Jews Rabbi in Jesus time lived at other Jews house where usually have good economic level. That was a tradition or a culture at that time. And also it is honor for the Jews to provide place to stay for the rabbi.

This is the background history and culture of Jesus statements: “The son of man does not have place to put his head”. Meaning, as the Jews Rabbi, Jesus does not have private house, his own or being alone. Very humble. God had become human. He was not only come to earth but he was human. He was not only human but servant.

Remember when Jesus sent 70 of his disciples without any things except one rope that they wore.(Luke 10:1-12). They only need to greet others in towns and places that they were visiting. If somebody received them at their homes then they will stay there. Just as Jesus did.

What about Jesus statement: “Let the death bury the death.........” Was Jesus being reactive, feel offended or angry to the people who have not showing commitment to Him? How come the death bury the death? Also why have Jesus said to the people who bury the death man as “THE DEATH”? Aren't they alive? Didn't they can do activity which is to bury? Isn't it word to bury is a verb?

Jesus statements probably can be confusing. But Jesus was not really trying to make you confuse. Also he was not trying to tell you about philosophy. He was not being reactive, feel offended or angry. He was not in the mood to tell something funny but to say the truth to the disciples. Not physical death but spiritual death.

Please read from Adam & Eve history in Genesis 3:17b

… do not eat that fruit, because the day when you eat it you will be death.

Human had died spiritually although physically they are alive. Physical Life is limited and temporary while the spiritual life is eternal and far more important.

Jesus was not only seeing what physical eyes can see but also spiritual. For Jesus, the most important thing of the importance is the spiritual part. What humans need probably won't necessary what they want it . It is not very surprising when Jesus told to”....go and preach the Kingdom of God wherever you go”. Because nothing more important then the spiritual life. Not the physical part. Not place to stay. Not family. Not relation within relatives. Not the ceremony. But the spiritual life. New Life. Not the one from Adam but from Christ.

By reading Luke 9:24-25, then it became clearer what Jesus really meant about spiritual and physical:

9:24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it .
9:25 What good is it for the a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

What a statement! Jesus stated that the spiritual life is far more important than physical life. Eternal Life more than 100 years in the world. Heaven is more than world.

Word of Prayer:
God thank you for this morning lesson. Give ability to your servant to be able to go and preach the word of God wherever I go. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
